  • ✓ Public links only
  • ✓ No sign-in
  • ✓ Honest availability checks

How it works

Three straightforward steps.

Thumbly reads the public video ID in a URL and requests the corresponding public image variants. It does not upload, edit, or claim ownership of a creator’s work.

  1. 01

    Copy a public video link

Copy a YouTube video, Short, live stream, embed URL, or its 11-character video ID.

  2. 02

    Preview the supplied sizes

Paste it above to check the thumbnail variants that YouTube actually makes available.

  3. 03

    Download the right image

Choose the largest useful version and save it with one click.

Responsible creator workflow

Choose the image that is useful—not just the one with the biggest label.

A good thumbnail reference communicates a video’s central idea at a small size. Look for one clear focal point, usable contrast, and an image that matches what the video actually delivers.

For your own uploads, follow YouTube’s current custom thumbnail guidance. Keep an editable original file rather than relying on a downloaded, compressed version.

FAQ

Questions, answered clearly.

Last reviewed .

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Copy a public YouTube URL, paste it into the downloader, select “Get thumbnails,” then choose an available quality and download it. An 11-character video ID also works.

What is the highest thumbnail quality available?

When YouTube supplies it, the maximum image is shown first. Some public videos do not have that variant, so use the next available size instead.

Does this work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a public Shorts URL as you would a standard video. The image versions available depend on YouTube's source image for that upload.

Is this downloader free?

Yes. Thumbly does not require an account and does not add a watermark to the downloaded image.

Can I reuse a downloaded thumbnail?

Only if you own it, have permission, or have another valid legal basis. Downloading an image does not grant copyright or reuse rights.

Why is maximum quality missing?

Some uploads were not supplied with a maximum-resolution thumbnail. The tool labels that version as unavailable so you can choose a real fallback.
